Get better or get out

I was at a training day recently learning how to deliver presentations. As on most training days the people on the course were a mixed bag, ranging from naturally excellent presenters to the cringeworthy and people who are…probably more gifted at other things.

But we all wanted to get better at presenting, mainly because everyone with my job title is expected to be good at it.

So what are you supposed to think about people who simply can’t present? Tell them to give up? Or perhaps they got one step better thanks to that course, and over time will improve?

It’s difficult to tell. When I got my current job (nearly five years ago) I couldn’t do it. I couldn’t really do it two years later, but after three years things started to click into place, and now I’m pretty confident in it.

On the flip side of that I am quick to acknowledge that there are some things that I’m not good at, and don’t think I’ll get much better at, so I’ve dropped them. But how can you tell which is which?

Normally I like to finish with a little conclusion but with this I seriously have no idea how to tell what to try harder at and what to give up on…any ideas?
