Spider Man is apparently still amazing

I’ve never really been into the Spider Man films – it always seems that this superhero does incredibly well for two-thirds of the film before being paralysed by something ridiculous…but I’m sure they’re really enjoyable, so I thought I’d share this extended preview that’s come out.

I reckon it would have been improved if, when asked at about 1:30 ‘Who are you?’ Spider Man responded ‘I’M BATMAN.’ Never mind.

Having sat through almost 40 hours of aeroplane travel in the last couple of weeks, I had the chance to watch a bunch of films. Here’s the quick rundown with my one line review for each one I can remember:

The King’s Speech: great film, but a bit over-rated. Funnier than the trailers would suggest, not as funny as everyone else said it was.

Black Swan: really interesting, well-produced psychological thriller.

Hero (starring Jet Li): beautiful arty martial arts film. Unpredictable twists.

Tangled: Disney movie about Rapunzel – typical Disney family film, lots of fun.

The Tourist: interesting, unique action/rom-com with Jonny Depp and Angeline Jolie. Enjoyable, easy watch.

TRON: Legacy: some cool effects but a bit slow moving and pretty confusing at times – switched this one off.

The Warrior’s Way: Eastern martial arts meets cowboys meets travelling circus. Funny, and some phenomenal battle scenes.

Azumi: a bunch of orphan kids are trained and sent on a mission to kill some Japanese tribal leaders. Typical Japanese film resulting in a climax in which everyone in the whole world dies – very fun but very gory. A really dislikeable bad guy.

The Time Traveller’s Wife: really nice concept, really romantic film – a couple of minor logical flaws but very enjoyable.

Reign of Assassins: wuxia film – nicely shot, nicely directed, nicely choreographed, interesting storyline with funny moments and some very cool ideas. I want the DVD of this one.

Love and Other Drugs: pretty awful rom-com. Switched off after not too long.

Unstoppable: really good disaster film about a runaway train based on a true story starring our mate Denzel.

Due Date: comedy from the makers of The Hangover. Had a lot of funny moments, but a couple of not-very-pleasant ones.

Memories

Here’s the deal. I came back from visiting my parents and attending a wedding this weekend, and have been looking at the photos – I had an absolutely wonderful time. Thanks for asking.

While we were there, I watched a hilarious film that my brother made of our latest family holiday to Paris – and again I was reminded of what an amazing time we had!

So here’s my thinking: every time I look at photos, I remember how amazing a time I had – I honestly can’t remember looking at a photo of a day trip, or a holiday, and thinking, ‘man, was that the most awful week of my life?’

Here’s my new rule: take a camera out everywhere with you, and you guarantee good times! At the very least, you guarantee to take a bunch of photos that you can show off to your friends and pretend like you had a good time. And then everyone’s happy.

Take my advice and start making memories today!

Get Smart

I saw Get Smart last night with my wife. We laughed a lot. The movie was actually made better by the fact that, in an empty cinema, we’d been put next to two teenage boys, high on orangeade, who kept on going to the toilet during the film.

The fact is that at every moment that was reasonably funny these two burst into fits of laughter, then proceeded to repeat that moment to each other, chuckling as they did so. Laughter is contagious – it could have been annoying but you somehow cannot be annoyed at two boys innocently laughing at something funny!

Here’s my point (actually there are two points):

One Go and see Get Smart. It’s great fun. If you don’t believe me then check out the free scene you can download through iTunes – it’s no way the funniest moment in the film but is a good laugh anyway.

Two Let’s all learn together to laugh at ourselves and each other in a way that doesn’t just take the mick! Those kids had a great night out, and so did we, because we all laughed together! LAUGH MORE!
