Humour in the Bible is a far wider topic than just this passage, but I was reading this the other day and it made me chuckle.
The book of Judges is pretty funny anyway, I love it because it just presents the truth without any apology whatsoever…I hope you enjoy this as much as I did!
The story so far: Samson has come up with a riddle, and has challenged the townspeople to guess the answer – the winner of the contest gets a new wardrobe. We join the story as his wife is starting to annoy him, and we get a little look at Samson’s grumpiness.
She wept before him the seven days that their feast lasted, and on the seventh day he told her, because she pressed him hard. Then she told the riddle to her people. And the men of the city said to him on the seventh day before the sun went down, “What is sweeter than honey? What is stronger than a lion?” And he said to them, “If you had not plowed with my heifer, you would not have found out my riddle.” And the Spirit of the LORD rushed upon him, and he went down to Ashkelon and struck down thirty men of the town and took their spoil and gave the garments to those who had told the riddle. In hot anger he went back to his father’s house. (Judges 14:17-19)
