Isn’t it good to actually feel British?
The monarchy’s pretty much the only thing we’ve got going for us at the moment – the British population hates the Government, the football teams aren’t as good as we want them to be, and even the legends that we can be proud of (Robin Hood, King Arthur) are more memorable as Disney cartoons than as ambassadors for our nation.
But the monarchy, despite the fact it doesn’t really mean anything any more, at least does feel very British. A guy in his sixties who wore a sword to his son’s wedding referring to Her Majesty as ‘Mummy’ just makes you feel good, doesn’t it?
And when the alternative to celebrating the monarchy is to be miserable, I think I’ll join in the hip-hip-hoorays for the Queen, and look forward to another day off in ten years’ time!
